Aquatic Animal-Step It Up

Today, I did the Aquatic Animal Step It Up Activity. It really challenged me to use my creativity to create something new. I decided to create a new type of jellyfish, so here is the jellyfish and its description:

Name: Bioluminescent Uniter

Habitat: in the Tonga Trench, they move in groups.

Consumes: Amphipods

Ability: Bioluminescent and electric at the yellow bids on the bottom of the tentacles. Normally, when faced with danger the Bioluminescent Uniter groups up together and forms a bigger animal.

While making Bioluminescent Uniter, I thought about how jellyfish are known as just beings in the ocean that pursue the waves. So I decided that, alone, they are weak, but together, they are strong.

I used the polyline to make the main shape of the jellyfish and the tentacles. Then I used shapes to make the electric part and the main bioluminescent place by the bell.

Overall I had lots of fun making the Bioluminescent Uniter, what do you think I could add to it?

Totally Awesome Sea Turtles

Yesterday I did the totally awesome turtle-kick start challenge. I had a great time learning about turtles. On the way I learnt about the difference between a turtle and a tortoise. The main difference is that turtles are more aquatic animals so they spend most of their life in the water while tortoises spend their lives on land. My favourite part about this activity is collecting 5 facts about turtles.

What’s something cool about turtles that you know?

Here is my poster about turtles:

Aquatic Animal

Today I did the Aquatic Animal activities, and I chose to do a Jellyfish. More specifically, the purple-striped jelly, scientifically known as Chrysaora colorata. The reason why I chose to do a jellyfish is because I’ve always thought they were really cool. For example: jellyfishes were able to survive through five mass extinctions, including the Great Dying that wiped out up to 70% of life on Earth.

Three facts about the purple-striped jelly:

  1. The purple-striped jelly is more active in lively currents, which helps it move and catch prey.
  2. There is one type of purple-striped jelly, called Pelagia noctiluca, that is bioluminescent.
  3. The purple-striped jelly sting is very painful but not life threatening.

Chippy Challenge

Today, I started my summer learning journey a bit late with the chippy challenge! I personally  enjoyed this challenge because it made me think about my choices of food. Through my research, I discovered the prices of various items, from fish to chips to drinks. I also learned an interesting fact: fish and chips were traditionally wrapped in newspapers to reduce costs, insulate the hot food, and absorb excess grease. And not for aesthetic purposes.

One thing I liked the most about the challenge was researching each item’s price to make sure it was correct.

Maths DLO

Today, Te Ngahere made a DLO of one thing that we learnt while learning about fractions. Everyone either worked in pairs or solo. Me and my pair decided to to do fraction of a number. One thing we could work on next time is to speak more clearly.  A small thing that we struggled with was explaining why we did those steps to get the answer.

Want Relief

For the last two weeks we have been reading a text about people who was stranded on a Auckland Islands for months. We had to answer some questions and fill out a storyboard. For the create activity we had to write a diary from someone’s point of view. It needed to give the reader an idea of how life on the island was like, and how the charter was feeling, what they had hoped. From that I learnt how to put myself in their perspective and get an idea of what they would of felt.

The Amazing Duffy Show!

Last week at Paihia School, we had a Duffy Show! This year’s show was about Duffy and Scruffy being detectives and helping to solve Krysta Kea’s (a rugby player) problem. Personally, I found the show really fun and inspiring. It was fascinating how they were able to change and act out different personalities, switching between them in just minutes.
My favorite parts were when the rats jumped out of nowhere and surprised everyone. It was very entertaining to watch their reactions! I wonder what play they’ll perform next year. What do you think?

Music!

Music!

Lately, we have been learning to make music using quarter, eighth, and sixteenth notes but in takadimi syllables (Ta, Ta-di, and Ta-ka-di-mi). We also had to perform the music. First, we watched a video performance done by a group called Stomp. They gave us an amazing inspiration, and our minds instantly popped with ideas. We got into groups of 3 and came up with a small piece of music to perform together. For awhile, we only clapped, then we added stomping. With every lesson we learnt a little bit. Soon, we started to use different instruments, but not the super fancy ones, like violins or harps. Instead, we used everyday items like plastic bags, bottles, and even paper!

Our task was to make a final piece of music to perform as a group. The instruction included use different instruments, include everything we learned in music, and having some members play different pieces of music at the same time.

One thing I learned was that we must use different types of instruments to avoid sounding bland. For instance, rather than having everyone hit an item, we could have one person scrunching up plastic to add texture. Next time, my group needs to work on making a more catchy rhythm. A challenge we faced was having a member absent from our group on the day of recording, so we needed to change our plan. In end we just got a member to take her place and give up their part.

Film Festival

For the last few weeks we have been making movies for the Film Festival. This year’s topic was to tell a story, so my group decided to do Masha and the Bear with a twist. We chose that to avoid making the same movies (e.g.,“Little Red Riding Hood”), yet still choosing something original.

I personally think that my group did really well with not arguing with each other. Every time someone suggested something instead of not listening or argued about it, we just went ahead and tried it. Next time, I think my group needs to think more about the shots, to ensure we capture what is important, and to make sure that people can understand what’s happening in that shot.

Something that I found difficult was adapting different personalities for different characters. Have you made a movie before? If you have what was it about?

Here’s my movie:

Words Poem

This week and last week for reading we had to use inference skills to understand how characters’ words and actions affect each other in the poem. We also had to make connections to the text and our own experiences. We had to answer some quick question, and do the create actively. For create activity we had to write the characters thoughts/feelings, and actions that they did in the poem.
